Competency standards for examinations given to applicators seeking certification in categories 7(C), 12, 13, and 14 are as follows:
Industrial Weed Control - Applicators must demonstrate a practical knowledge of weed pests on industrial sites. Applicators must also demonstrate knowledge of different types and formulations of herbicides used and application techniques and methods to avoid contamination of sensitive areas and minimize environmental impact.
Wood Preservation and Wood Treatment - Applicators must demonstrate practical knowledge in the use of wood preservatives, including tree and timber physiology, personal protective clothing and equipment, different types of wood preservatives and their uses, related health and safety measures, and practices necessary to prevent environmental contamination.
Antifoulant Paint - Applicators must demonstrate practical knowledge of the principles and practices of using antifouling paints, including toxicity and common exposure routes to humans and nontarget organisms; proper cleaning, disposal and containment techniques; understanding of target pests; proper handling, mixing and application procedures; and the laws and regulations governing pesticides and antifouling paints.
Metam-Sodium - Applicators must demonstrate practical knowledge of the safe handling and proper application of metam-sodium, including practical knowledge of root growth and biology, equipment type and calibration procedures, proper pesticide handling, mixing and application procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment, exposure to human and nontarget organisms, proper cleaning, disposal and containment techniques, effects of root control pesticides on sewage treatment plants, factors that may lead to a hazardous condition, and the laws and regulations that cover pesticide use.
