Section 17.1 - Number plates continued
(a) Except as otherwise provided herein, number plates assigned to vehicles for the registration period commencing January 1, 1966, and number plates assigned to vehicles on original registrations in registration periods thereafter, shall consist of two plates and one validating sticker except that only one number plate and one validating sticker shall be assigned for trailer and motorcycle registrations. Such number plates, or plate, shall be continued for succeeding registration periods, until otherwise prescribed by the commissioner, so long as the vehicle is registered in the name of the same person to whom such number plates were issued and the vehicle is eligible for assignment of such plates.
(b) Number plates issued for registration periods commencing prior to January 1, 1973 and validation stickers for such registrations shall be valid only until the end of the registration period for which they are issued. Number plates issued for registration periods commencing January 1, 1973 shall be reflectorized and shall be continued for succeeding registration periods until otherwise prescribed by the commissioner, so long as the vehicle is registered in the name of the same person to whom such number plates were issued and the vehicle is eligible for assignment of such plates.
