Section 55-4-114 - Maximum gross weight and ownership displayed on certain vehicles(a) The declared maximum gross weight, including motor vehicle and load, shall be painted with durable paint in letters and figures.(b) Nothing in this section shall be construed as a grant of authority for the use on the public highways of the state of any motor vehicle that now is or may hereafter by law be prohibited from such use.(c)(1) There shall be displayed on both sides of the power unit of each freight motor vehicle the name or trade name and address of the motor carrier under whose authority the vehicle is being operated, and an identifying company number of the vehicle; provided, the requirement for an identifying number shall not apply to a carrier owning and operating one (1) vehicle.(2) The display of name and number shall be in letters and figures in sharp color contrast to the background and be of a size, color, and shape that is readily legible during daylight hours, from a distance of fifty feet (50') while the vehicle is not in motion, and the display shall be kept and maintained in a manner as to remain so legible.(3) If desired, displays may be accomplished through use of a removable device so prepared and displayed as otherwise to meet the identification, legibility, and display location requirements of this subsection (c).(4) Nothing in this subsection (c) shall prohibit the display of any additional information that is not inconsistent with this subsection (c).(5) This subsection (c) shall not be applicable to vehicles having a licensed or actual weight of thirty-five thousand pounds (35,000 lbs.) or less and operating not for hire solely intrastate.Acts 1951, ch. 70, § 85 (Williams, § 5538.185); Acts 1955, ch. 52, §§ 9, 13; 1955, ch. 109, § 1; 1972, ch. 518, § 9; 1973, ch. 326, § 8; T.C.A.
