Section 7-9A-1 - DefinitionsTerms used in this chapter mean:
(1) "Document," any information that is: (a) Inscribed on a tangible medium or that is stored in an electronic or other medium and is retrievable in perceivable form; and(b) Eligible to be recorded in the public records maintained by the register of deeds;(2) "Electronic," relating to technology having electrical, digital, magnetic, wireless, optical, electromagnetic, or similar capabilities;(3) "Electronic document," a document that is received by the register of deeds in an electronic form;(4) "Electronic recording commission" and "commission," the commission established in § 7-9A-4;(5) "Electronic signature," an electronic sound, symbol, or process attached to or logically associated with a document and executed or adopted by a person with the intent of affixing a signature on the document;(6) "Paper document," a document that is received by the register of deeds in a form that is not electronic;(7) "Person," an individual, corporation, business trust, estate, trust, partnership, limited liability company, association, joint venture, public corporation, government, or governmental subdivision, agency, or instrumentality, or any other legal or commercial entity;(8) "Register of deeds," the county register of deeds for the county in which a document is received;(9) "State," a state of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, or any territory or insular possession subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.Added by S.L. 2014, ch. 47,s. 1, eff. 7/1/2014.
