Section 13:2604 - Territorial jurisdiction; Jefferson ParishA. There is hereby established in Jefferson Parish, effective on January 1, 1987, a justice of the peace district and court, which shall be comprised of Ward 5, Precincts 1A, 1C, 2, 3, and 5 of Jefferson Parish. The court shall have territorial jurisdiction throughout the district and shall have subject matter jurisdiction as provided by law for justice of the peace courts. The territorial jurisdiction of any justice of the peace district and court, which prior to June 24, 1986 included any of Ward 5, Precincts 1A, 1C, 2, 3, or 5, shall be reduced accordingly and limited to that portion of its territorial jurisdiction lying outside of the district herein created.B. The offices of justice of the peace and constable for the court established in Subsection A of this Section are hereby created. The first justice of the peace shall be elected in accordance with the provisions of Article V, Section 22, of the Constitution of Louisiana. He shall take office on January 1, 1987, for a term which shall expire on December 31, 1990, and his successor shall be elected for a term of six years, all in accordance with R.S. 13:2581.1. The first constable shall be elected at the congressional election to be held in 1986.
