Section 8-1917 - Idle reduction technology; maximum weight limit exception(a) Notwithstanding the provisions of K.S.A. 8-1908 and 8-1909, and amendments thereto, the maximum gross weight limit and axle weight limit for any vehicle or combination of vehicles equipped with idle reduction technology may be increased by a quantity necessary to compensate for the additional weight of such idle reduction technology as provided for in 23 U.S.C. § 658.17. In no case shall the additional weight increase allowed by this section be greater than 400 pounds.(b) Upon request by an appropriate law enforcement officer, the vehicle operator shall provide proof: (1) By written certification, the weight of the idle reduction technology;(2) by demonstration or certification, that the idle reduction technology is fully functional at all times; and(3) that the gross weight increase is not used for any purpose other than for the use of idle reduction technology.(c) As used in this section, "idle reduction technology" means any device or system of devices that: (1) Is installed on a heavy-duty diesel-powered on-highway truck or truck tractor; and(2) is designed to provide to such truck or truck tractor those services, such as heat, air conditioning or electricity, that would otherwise require the operation of the main drive engine while the truck or truck tractor is temporarily parked or remains stationary.(d) This section shall be part of and supplemental to the uniform act regulating traffic on highways.
