Section 8:33E-2.5 - Use of inpatient facilities
(a) In a center performing 350 open heart surgical cases annually, the following inpatient facilities shall be required:
1. An intermediate intensive care/cardiac care unit will be available for post-operative care. It shall include four beds for patients having an average length of stay of three to four additional days following discharge from the SICU or surgical recovery room. These beds may be located in a cardiovascular step-down unit with telemetry monitoring but reduced nursing coverage consistent with licensing requirements at N.J.A.C. 8:43G-9.20 and in accordance with patient diagnosis. Suitably equipped beds will be available for the rest of the patient's stay. At a minimum, the intensive care/cardiac care unit will have the following capabilities:
i. Hemodynamic ECG monitoring:
ii. Temporary pacemaker insertion:
iii. Resuscitative equipment and supplies, including defibrillator and cardiac emergency medications; and
iv. Cardiovascular support devices (such as an intra-aortic balloon pump).
