Rule 37.106.2853 - OXYGEN USE(1) A resident who requires the use of oxygen: (a) shall be permitted to self-administer the oxygen if the resident is capable of: (i) determining their need for oxygen; and(ii) administering the oxygen to themselves or with assistance.(2) The direct care staff employed by the facility shall monitor the ability of the resident to operate the equipment in accordance with the orders of the practitioner.(3) The facility shall ensure that all direct care staff who may be required to assist resident's with administration of oxygen have demonstrated the ability to properly operate the equipment.(4) The following rules must be followed when oxygen is in use: (a) oxygen tanks must be secured and properly stored at all times;(b) no smoking or open flames may be allowed in rooms in which oxygen is used or stored, and such rooms must be posted with a conspicuous "No Smoking, Oxygen in Use" sign;(c) a backup portable unit for the administration of oxygen shall be present in the facility at all times when a resident who requires oxygen is present in the facility, this includes when oxygen concentrators are used;(d) the equipment used to administer oxygen must be in good working condition; and(e) the equipment used to administer oxygen is removed from the facility when it is no longer needed by the resident.Mont.
