Criteria for ammonia as total ammonia nitrogen (mg/L TAN) are pH- and temperature-dependent. Criteria are derived in accordance with the equations set forth below, where MIN indicates the lesser of the two values separated by a comma, MAX indicates the greater of the two values separated by a comma, and T is temperature in degrees Celsius. The criterion maximum concentration (CMC or acute) equations differ according to the presence or absence of fish in the family Salmonidae.

37 The MassDEP Office of Research and Standards (ORS) issues guidance for chemicals other than those with Massachusetts MCLs in drinking water. These ORS guidance values are known as ORS Guidelines or ORSG and are usually developed for use by Departmental programs in the absence of any other federal standards or guidance. ORS uses methodologies similar to that used by the EPA's Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water (OGWDW) when setting guidelines for chemicals in drinking water.
