"Indicator Compound" means an individual chemical in municipal wastewater that represents the physical, chemical, and biodegradable characteristics of a specific family of trace organic chemicals; is present in concentrations that provide information relative to the environmental fate and transport of those chemicals; may be used to monitor the efficiency of trace organic compounds removal by treatment processes; and provides an indication of treatment process failure.
