Section 40.4 - Police officers memorial(a) Findings.--The General Assembly hereby finds that:(1) Law enforcement is one of the most essential services provided to the citizens of our great nation.(2) The peace officers of our nation serve the citizens of their communities with dedication and integrity.(3) These men and women stand guard in our midst, night and day, to protect us through enforcement of our laws.(4) The devotion and intrepidity of our nation's peace officers and the sacrifices of officers who have been killed in the line of duty should not go unrecognized.(5) Public Law 87-726, 36 U.S.C. § 167, authorizes the President to designate May 15th of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day."(b) Peace Officers Memorial Day; Police Week.--May 15th is designated as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty and designate that week of May during which May 15th occurs as "Police Week" in Pennsylvania in recognition of our country's courageous peace officers.(c) Display of flags.--The flag of the United States and the flag of this Commonwealth shall be flown at half-mast from all public grounds and buildings of this Commonwealth on May 15th to honor peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.1992, Dec. 4, P.L. 761, No. 115, § 1, effective in 60 days.
