Section 66-3-405 - Special plates for members of congressA. Upon compliance with all laws of this state relating to registration and licensing of motor vehicles, and upon application, any delegate from New Mexico to the congress of the United States shall be furnished with license plates for such passenger cars as are required to be registered in this state. Upon each plate, in lieu of the registration number of the vehicle owner, shall be the name of the house of the United States congress in which he serves, followed by the number which indicates his seniority as compared with the other member, or members, of the same house of congress from New Mexico. B. At the time of delivery of a special plate, the applicant shall surrender the current license plate issued for such motor vehicle, if any have been issued. C. When the ownership of the motor vehicle for which a special plate has been furnished by the director changes from one person to another, or the owner ceases to be a member of congress, the special license plate herein authorized shall be promptly removed from the vehicle by the holder of the special plate and returned to the director, at which time the person so removing the special plate is entitled to receive a regular license plate for such motor vehicle. D. The holder of a special plate is entitled to transfer such a special plate from one automobile to another during the year in which the plate is valid, upon application to the director for the transfer. In the event such a transfer is made, the owner of the vehicle from which the special plate is removed is not entitled to receive a regular license plate except upon payment of the fees established by law. 1953 Comp., § 64-3-405, enacted by Laws 1978, ch. 35, § 84.
