Section 17:436.5 - Sickle cell disease; training for school nursesA. Each local public school board shall adopt a policy to require that each school nurse participates in an in-service training program of at least one hour relative to sickle cell disease. The school boards shall use the instructional materials provided in accordance with Subsection C of this Section. The training may be incorporated into an existing in-service training program.B. The program shall include information on symptoms of and treatments for sickle cell disease in children and shall include, at minimum, the following:(1) The medical needs students may have in a school setting related to the physiological complications of the disease, including but not limited to anemia, sensitivity to heat and cold, increased urinary frequency, pain episodes, fevers, and stroke.(2) Possible accommodations in the classroom, at recess, and during school meal times for students who experience health problems associated with sickle cell disease during the school day.(3) Methods for communicating with parents and other school personnel in order to support positive academic outcomes for students with sickle cell disease.C. The Louisiana Sickle Cell Commission shall provide the instructional materials to the state Department of Education, and the department shall provide the materials and information to school boards for the purposes of this Section.
