Section 4.114 - Executive Order No. 114: Naming the Poughkeepsie State Office Building the Eleanor Roosevelt State Office Building

WHEREAS, Eleanor Roosevelt, a native of New York State and a resident here during most of her life, demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the well-being, education and freedom from discrimination of her fellow citizens, and worked tirelessly as First Lady of our Nation to bring about our Nation's emergence from the Great Depression; and

WHEREAS, Eleanor Roosevelt's farsighted dedication to the causes of freedom, international accord and world peace, and the eradication of all forms of poverty and oppression led her to serve with distinction in the post-war era as a representative of the United States to the General Assembly of the United Nations and Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights, earning her wide international acclaim as a co-author of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948; and

WHEREAS, the extraordinary commitment of Eleanor Roosevelt to our Nation's fundamental principles of democracy, tolerance, compassion and care for the less fortunate, demonstrated by her missions to our armed forces and allies in support of their heroic struggle in World War II, and her prolific teaching and writings, made her a shining champion of our cherished democratic principles and merited for her global esteem and affection as "The First Lady of the World";

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARIO M. CUOMO, Governor of the State of New York, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim and direct that the State Office Building in the Town of Poughkeepsie, County of Dutchess, shall hereafter be known as the Eleanor Roosevelt State Office Building.

The Commissioner of General Services charged with the superintendence and management thereof, shall cause to be established and affixed in an appropriate location within the Eleanor Roosevelt State Office Building a suitable permanent plaque, to memorialize the illustrious and singular civic, humanitarian and political contributions of Eleanor Roosevelt to our State and Nation.
