Dykema, a leading national law firm, announced on May 9 that it will implement CoCounsel in their practice. CoCounsel, a first-of-its-kind AI legal assistant, is built on GPT-4, OpenAI’s most advanced large language model and the first AI to achieve a passing bar exam score for all 50 states.
A top NLJ 500 and Am Law 200 firm, Dykema represents businesses worldwide on complex transactional and litigation matters. The firm recognized CoCounsel as a powerful tool that will help their attorneys augment the quality and timeliness of services to clients across practice groups, while keeping data secure.
Ed Empamano, Chief Information Officer at Dykema, commented on how CoCounsel aligns with the firm’s strategy while benefiting clients. “At Dykema, we place heavy emphasis on implementing technology that enables us to deliver exceptional results and service to our clients. CoCounsel can empower our attorneys to do exactly that with speed and precision.”
“We strive to be innovative, trusted advisors to our clients, and CoCounsel will help us deliver on that objective,” said Len Wolfe, Dykema Chair and CEO. CoCounsel “allows our attorneys to explore new options to meet our clients’ needs while providing the security and guardrails they expect,” added Myka Hopgood, Senior Director of Strategic Legal Innovation at Dykema.
Dykema joins several other prominent law firms that have integrated CoCounsel into their practice, including DLA Piper, Sheppard Mullin, Fisher Phillips, and Ogletree Deakins. The firm’s selection of CoCounsel is a testament to the product’s ability to increase efficiency while enhancing the quality of legal work.
Beyond saving attorneys significant time—freeing them up to focus on more complex, strategic work and serve more clients—CoCounsel is being adopted based on the reliability of its output and strength of its security program. To ensure its reliability,
CoCounsel was used more than 50,000 times before launch in day-to-day work by a varied group of beta testers that included more than 400 attorneys from 40 firms and organizations, including multinational law firms, solo practitioners, nonprofits, and Fortune 50 corporations.
Casetext designed CoCounsel to provide the high level of data privacy and security required for professional legal work, and features security controls that are substantially more rigorous than those of consumer-facing LLM-powered products such as ChatGPT. CoCounsel accesses OpenAI’s model through private servers, and uses a zero-retention API, ensuring lawyers’ and their clients’ data remains private, secure, and in their control.
