IN RE: JUSTICE JEFFERSON D. HUGHES III

JUDICIARY COMMISSION OF LOUISIANA

WEIMER, C.J., dissenting.

I very respectfully dissent. I would reject the petition for consent discipline and allow this matter to proceed to a public hearing on the merits.

I respect the decision of my colleagues, who I know have thoroughly and carefully evaluated this matter, as has the Judiciary Commission, which is constitutionally established to investigate and make recommendations to the Supreme Court regarding judicial discipline. See La. Const. art. V, § 25.

Nevertheless, a public hearing affords citizens the opportunity to evaluate the actions of public servants and can reassure the public that their government functions effectively.
